What Happened to Tourism After Covid-19?

April 4, 2020

A lot of businesses have been affected by Covid-19 and tourism companies are the ones that took a big hit by this virus. As no more flights are coming into Singapore, there are no tourists visiting the country either. Hotels have decided to close down temporarily, so what does this mean for other attraction places in Singapore? What happened tourism after Covid-19?

Reported by edition.cnn.com, Jan Freitag, senior vice president of Lodging Insights for hospitality analysis firm STR, said that in times of great uncertainty such as in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks or after the end of the recession in 2009, it has taken twice as long for room rates to rebound than it did for them to drop to their lowest point.

Travelers who are comfortable with cruising will find very low prices as cruise lines restart service, said Christopher Anderson, professor of business at Cornell University’s Hotel School in Ithaca, New York “I’m going to want the safety and security of established cleaning protocols that I get from an established lodging provider,” Anderson said, so he anticipates a negative impact in the short term for Airbnb-type rentals.

Hygiene Is Number One

People have been paying extra attention to cleanliness standard. “Everyone, whether it’s cruise, lodging or hotels, are going to have to change how they monitor and clean the environment that consumers interact with and communicate that back to guests in order to increase their comfort level,” Anderson said.

Whether that means hand sanitizers everywhere or regularly disinfecting hard surfaces, “there will be a clearly communicated regimen to let the customers know, ‘here’s what we’re doing to keep you safe,'” Freitag said.

Planes and Other Transportation

People will be more comfortable traveling by air if planes are less full, says Anderson. “If we really want to turn this around, airlines have to be flying with empty middle seats and prices dramatically lower than what we had last summer,” he said.

Some airlines also announced plans to eliminate some services, such as food and drinks, as well as officers in the middle seat to reduce interaction while flying.

Anderson saw that business travel would recover faster. Then followed by a vacation trip in the country. Moderate, trips outside the island or abroad tend to decrease.

Those are some of the tourism forecasts after the Covid-19 attack from the expert’s point of view. Let’s work together to stay at home, keep our distance, and always maintain our health and personal hygiene so that this pandemic ends soon. Together, we can all do our part, right?
