This Christmas in Singapore will absolutely be special because you won’t only be surrounded by colourful lights and exciting events but there will be an eclipse happening on 26 December 2019! Continue reading this article to find out more!
After 20 Years
An eclipse took place on 22 August 1998 and has never had another until this coming Christmas season (that’s 20 years time difference!). The eclipse covered 83% of the sun then. #SGB_Team wonder how much will it hide the sun this year!
If #SGB_Family missed the eclipse this year, you will have to wait until 2063 to witness another. That’s such a long time isn’t it? That’s why you shouldn’t miss it this year!
Ring of Fire Shaped
The eclipse this year is reported to cover 94% of the sun, in which it will leave the outer circle to form a ring of fire shape. At 11:27, there will be a partial eclipse but at 13:22, the phenomenal annular eclipse will take place where the moon will be at the centre of the sun.
The Best Locations to Get The Best Angle
Reported by Straittimes, Albert Ho, President of the Singapore Astronomy Community has shared that the south side of an Singapore is the best spot to view an eclipse. However, he also warned that watching it from the north of Singapore will show the eclipse in a slightly different way.
Singapore Astronomy Association is working hand in hand with People’s Association to celebrate the eclipse at Passion Wave @ Jurong Lake Gardens from 11:00 to 16:00 where you will be provided with telescopes and filtered binoculars. How exciting is that!
Rules to Watch Eclipse
Please be reminded that the eclipse in Singapore will still be one intensely bright so #SGB_Family can purchase a solar filtered glasses at Science Centre Singapore.
